What is Food Down the Road?
Food Down the Road, refers to food that is grown close to home. We consider “local food” to be grown within a 100 km area of the eater. It also refers to the future. We are looking down the road toward a sustainable Kingston and countryside where all citizens can enjoy healthy food.
Food Down the Road was initiated by the farmers and eaters of the National Farmers Union, Local 316 in December 2006. NFU Local 316 has a long history of successful advocacy work in Frontenac, Lennox &Addington counties and the City of Kingston.
The NFU is at the table with a broad range of food system participants who have gathered to shape the future of food in our region. This “systemic” approach is key to our movement.
It takes farmers, gardeners, processors, distributors, farmers markets, grocers, restaurants, institutions, meal programs, food banks, health care professionals, food justice advocates, politicians, researchers, educators, universities, colleges, community organizations, environmentalists, economic developers, investors, the media, and engaged eaters to build a sustainable local food system. It takes people just like you!
Through visioning, researching, educating, advocating and partnership building, Food Down the Road is a vibrant community movement building a more vital and sustainable local food system.
From Maberly to Inverary, Howe Island to Amherst Island, Bloomfield to Brockville people are joining their energy, enthusiasm and commitment to shape a more sustainable local food system. Our broad and diversified movement seeks to build a local food system that can nourish us all in the future.

A National Farmers Union Local 316 initiative, Food Down the Road: Toward a Sustainable Local Food System for Kingston and Countryside relies on the generosity of many partners, supporters and volunteers. Food Down the Road is funded in part through contributions by the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario under the Agricultural Management Institute (AMI), an initiative of the federal-provincial-territorial Agricultural Policy Framework designed to position Canada’s agri-food sector as a world leader. The Agricultural Adaptation Council administers the AMI program on behalf of the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario.
